Zynga's problem stems from the fact that they built their gaming empire on the Facebook platform. When Facebook no longer enabled them to get customers easily through spamming people's newsfeeds, they started a downhill slide that they haven't and likely won't recover from.
The gaming business in general is difficult to succeed in; people get bored of games very quickly and always want the next thing. It's hard to know which games will be successful ahead of time.
