What I want to know is exactly how do websites like Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube make money?

I’m an undergrad who recently became in interested in entrepreneurship and the startup world. I’m participating in a business competition to help me learn about this kind of stuff because I have no experience in business at all. If anyone could explain this or point me towards some resources, I would really appreciate it. Thanks!

The revenue streams for each of those websites you mentioned are different, but mainly the answer is advertising. YouTube displays ads on top of monetized videos in addition to right ad panel on every page. Facebook's main revenue streams come from advertising and promoting pages/posts.

I believe some of them sell their data as well (semi~personal profile data and statistics).

Targeted advertising, dig data mining, and many many more things in the future. The interwebs IS the TV, magazine, newspapers, billboards, soapopers, gameshows of the past all rolled into one.
