I want to invest in a startup but I’m not an accredited investor. Will I get in trouble?

It is a once in a lifetime opportunity. I studied this field for years and finally discovered a startup that is on the verge of accomplishing something incredible. It is disruptive and I am among the few first people who discovered the potential. I don’t qualify as accredited investor and yet I am willing to bet a significant portion of my capital on this company. They would let me invest. When I do it, and the company becomes a success, and they find out I was not allowed to invest due to not being an “accredited” investor, does that mean someone could force me to give the shares back at the buying price? What could go wrong besides just losing the invested money?

The soliciting laws has changed but even back then it's not illegal to invest if you're not accredited it's just illegal for companies to solicit or advertise to non accredited investors.
