What are good ways to test whether people really buy into an idea before working together?

I have found some people that have expressed interest in working on an idea together, but how can I know whether they are really serious about it? Is there any good ways to test or verify?

see if they'll sacrifice their whole weekend for the product or idea.

Start with something small like a weekend hackathon. See how u work together. See if you can accomplish something as a team. Then move to something bigger.

When they can deliver something small, fast. Then something a little bigger just as fast as it can be done. Then they do it a third time.

Proof is always in what people do.

Seems pretty straightforward: Money, time, mindshare

Keep in mind, though, that as you increase the money/time/mindshare contributions, so too are expectations. If you want to work with a friend, talk up front about each other's expectations on ownership, areas of responsibility, commitment, and so forth.

Money, even if it's a token amount.
