I binge code; sometimes few days go by where I write no code. Then I turn it up and work 12 or so hours and spit features out. My startup is more than happy with my productivity as CTO. I imagine what would be possible if I could code 40 hours a week

Probably wouldn't be healthy and the quality would go down. Ask for 20 and stay healthy, exercise.

Aim, not ask.

I have no scientific basis for this, yet, but I believe that this is a distinct personality trait. I also work in high productive spurts followed by a dip/plateau. I've associated my productivity with my creativity reserves. I deplete my creativity until the tank is empty and can't produce any more until its refilled. Every profession deals with this. Writers call it writer's block.

Thoughts?

I attribute it to a lack of practicing discipline. Could be the rush of an upcoming deadline since it's fully under my control. I don't have to code full time; I could for example be learn something new about coding. However, I end up learning something related to some other aspect of business not related to coding; this, while having some value, is an attribution to my lack of focus. And lastly, it spirals to Facebook at times and then it's just a waste of time.
